Early Spring Big Bass Fishing can be the time when you can catch your personal best. Can you feel it in the air? The bass can. Springtime ushers in changing air temperature, longer days and stronger sun angles. This triggers a fish’s instincts to move out of deep winter holes to search for food. My old stomping grounds in the Northeast have given memories of the biggest bass being caught between mid-March and May.
Anyone who has fished in the early spring knows that this time of year can also be very challenging. Weather and water temperature have a lot to do with these challenges. For example, a spring cold front can shut down the bite and send fish back to deeper water. Thus frustrating anglers into waiting until the summer pattern takes hold. In order to give you the best chance of catching some big bass this spring, lure selection and target selection is extremely important in your early spring bass fishing adventures.
Scale down for spring sweetwater bass.
Its early spring when the water is still below 50 degrees in most areas. Bass have already begun to feed and you want to get in on the action. For this time of the year, nothing beats smaller profile baits (like the Z-man Big TRD). Get the fish chomping and ready for your early spring fishing for big bass. Whether you are targeting largemouths or smallies, these baits will get the job done.
Allow the TRD to settle on the bottom, do not move it for a good 30 seconds. Drag the lure about 3 inches and let set again. Most bites will come while it is sitting.
Early spring is prime time for smaller baits. They may save your day, especially after a cold front or major weather change.
Before you can hit the water and try to finesse a bass, you might want to rethink your arsenal. This is not summer or fall where bigger sticks and heavier line may be needed. Not that you can’t catch big fish on light lines, but the key is the bait looking as natural as possible. Heavier lines will drag a bait down, making it sluggish and not perform to its max during your early spring fishing endeavors.
Spring is on it’s way and the freshwater fishing for big bass are primed and ready for some great action. Get out the light tackle spinning gear and hit the water for some early spring big bass fishing.
Remember in the spring, you could land the largest bass of your life while enjoying some early spring big bass fishing!
