Cold Front Bass Fishing

Cold Front Bass Fishing

Cold fronts can significantly impact bass fishing. They change their behavior and make them less active. Anglers are often forced to adapt their tactics. While some bass may retreat to deeper water, others might remain shallow and seek cover like weeds or rocks. Fishing after a cold front requires slowing down, using more natural presentations, and targeting areas with cover.

What is a Cold Front & How does it Affect Fishing?

We all have a vague notion of how cold fronts affect bass and bass fishing. They turn good or great fishing bad, make bites come far less frequently, and generally make for struggles on the water. Be optimistic that you can make the most out of post-frontal conditions.

A cold front actually takes place a day or so before the drop in temperature sets in. Then, the skies become blue. This typically shows itself in the form of high winds, rainy weather, or thunderstorms. It’s those kinds of days where all hell breaks loose. The approaching front is causing a disturbance as the differing masses come together.

…still aggressively feed even after the front comes through…

When that front comes through, it has a more significant effect on the angler than on the bass. This is because the front is windy, cold, and usually raining. It’s uncomfortable. It’s hard to fish in those conditions. But as that front is coming through, the bass often feed on baitfish. They’re attacking lures, and they’re aggressive. Even though the weather conditions are terrible, often those fish haven’t moved. They’re still up shallow, they’re still aggressive, they’re still hitting fast-moving lures.

So don’t assume that because the storm or front is coming through, the fish aren’t biting, they’ve hunkered down, and they’re done. It doesn’t mean they’ve moved off to deeper waters, and you can’t catch them up shallow. Go out there and fish as if the front hasn’t come through yet. Let the fish tell you what their disposition is. Often, you’ll be surprised to learn that they are still up shallow. They’re aggressively feeding even after the front has come through.
